The Associate Board of EverThrive IL invites you to join us on Friday, April 9, from 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. CST for a Maternal and Child Health Career Panel. We will be joined by Jessica Davenport-Williams, co-founder of Black Girls Break Bread, Tarita Scurlock, Public Health Associate at EverThrive IL, Leah Siegel, a Family Nurse Practitioner at Rush’s School-Based Health Centers, and Lee Smith, the Program Manager and Director of Case Management for Sinai Community Institute. Our panelists will be sharing about their current work and career paths within maternal and child health.
This event is specifically geared towards students and young professionals with a career interest within public health, although all are welcome to attend.

Jessica Davenport-Williams is a native of Chicago with 15 years of experience in higher education, non-profit and federal sectors as a financial administrator and strategic advisor. As a champion for racial equity, Davenport-Williams has co-authored for NACUBO Business Officer, presented nationally and internationally on the affordability, sustainability and accessibility of higher education while also working to improve educational equity in K-12. In her work for the advancement of women and minorities, she co-created the 2015 NACUBO Inaugural Women’s Forum, serves on maternal and infant mortality task forces at the local, state, and federal level and most recently pioneered an Illinois state-wide forum to address the national crisis around Black Maternal Child Health. Davenport-Williams holds an undergraduate degree in Statistics and Operations Research from the University of Illinois-Chicago and 2020 graduate of the Certificate in Nonprofit Management program at the University of Chicago graduate school of Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice (formerly SSA). She is a loving wife and mother of two extraordinary daughters.
Tarita Scurlock is the Public Health Associate at EverThrive Illinois. She comes to this role with a wealth of knowledge from a variety of roles in health promotion, patient care, and program management. She is passionate about advocating for social justice issues such as hunger and food insecurity, racial injustice, and inequities in health care. Tarita holds a Masters in Public Health from Benedictine University and her Bachelor of Science from Chicago State University.
Leah Siegel is a Family Nurse Practitioner at Rush’s School-Based Health Center located at the Richard T. Crane High School in Chicago, Illinois. She has worked in School-Based Health Centers and Federally Qualified Health Centers since 2015. She has also worked as a School Nurse at multiple Chicago Public and Charter Schools. She received her Master of Science in Nursing Degree from the University of Vermont in 2014, and she did her undergraduate work at the University of Vermont as well, where she studied French and English. She is committed to providing holistic, equitable, and justice-informed care to all of her patients and their families. In her free time, Leah enjoys traveling, gardening, and playing with her dog.
Lee is a lifelong Chicago resident, who has been professionally active in the community for over 35 years. He has a strong passion for people, and is always willing to give of himself without reservations.
In 1977, Lee began his public service career as a Community Organizer with The Woodlawn Organization (T.W.O.). During his 10 years with T.W.O., he worked in Maternal and Child Health as a Case Manager for the 9x 90 program. In 1989, he joined the staff at the Chicago Urban League as a Community Economic Development Specialist, and eventually returned to Maternal and Child Health as a Senior Case Manager in the Healthy Start Program until 1997, when he started working for the Westside Association for Community Action (W.A.C.A.). While at W.A.C.A., from 1997 to 2009, Lee served as the Program Coordinator for Family Case Management, Health Works, and Healthy Births for Healthy Communities Programs.
