In the Illinois Department of Public Health’s (IDPH’s) newly released Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Report, mental health conditions, including substance use disorder, were the leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths in Illinois. Additionally, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a documented rise in mental health needs as people’s lives have been upended. Both of these crises highlight that it is more crucial than ever to ensure that pregnant and postpartum people have the mental health resources they need to live healthy lives.
